Imagine the following: It is a 1955, and we are sitting at a desk as a doorman, and we have one job, and that is to determine who gets in the apartment building. Sounds simple, right? There is the ringer, of course,–some of our neighbors are not even people. That’s Not My Neighbor immerses us in the life of a doorman who has a chilling mission, to spot and stop the doppelgangers which are entering our apartment building. This is a 2D horror game with a spin on the job simulator genre that has created a game that is not only frightening but also highly suggestive.

It is 1955, and doppelgangers are now more than normal, so the Department of Doppelganger Detection (D.D.D.) has been established. We are not merely checking identity and flicking people through–we are the final barrier of man against the beasts who desire to pass as our own. Such doppelgangers are capable of exactly replicating the physical and behavioral characteristics of local residents and it is extremely hard to tell them apart with real tenants. A single misstep, and we will be fodder to these shape changing monsters. The stakes are never greater and that is why every shift behind our desk will seem to be a heart-pounding thriller.
Gameplay Testing The Smallest Of Details.
We should pay all our attention to the look of every resident so that intruders could not enter the building. Each piece of paper counts–we are scanning entry request forms, examining ID photographs and matching each entry to our resident list. There are incidences when doppelgangers go wrong when filling their forms and most times, they end up stealing the job description of another neighbor. We are calling apartments to check identities, asking visiting people questions about the discrepancies, and are making a decision on a split-second basis, as to who stays and who is sent away. The game is a game that encourages and rewards patience and penalizes rash decisions, which keeps us on the edge of our seats as each knock at the door sounds.
Why We Can’t Stop Playing
The genius behind That’s Not My Neighbor is its effective tension that builds up- with every successful transition we become more convinced and more paranoid. We begin to memorise information about residents, devise our own mechanisms of tracking down imposters and scrutinise every face that comes at our window. Nightmare Mode is also present in the game once the players have mastered the basics and require even more challenges. There is no satisfaction like catharsis of successfully detecting a well-dress doppelganger and there is no horror like the horror of not managing to serve as a watchful eye until our next work shift. The reason we continue to revisit it is because each time we play through we have a unique experience, each error we make teaches us something new, and the question of whether that was really my neighbor. never gets old.
